A fun map puzzle challenge to practice prepositions of place!

Uses:

  • Can be used as a listening, speaking, and/or reading game to practice using the prepositions "in front of," "behind," "next to," and "between" as well as review vocabulary for places in a city
  • Great for ESL/EFL

How it works:

  • Students listen carefully to the teacher's dialogue in order to figure out where 8 different places go on a city map.
  • Once they know, they will cut and glue either the image of that place or the word on their map worksheet (depending on which version you use).
  • In the reading-focused variation of this game, instead of the teacher saying the dialogue, the students will read the sentences on the PowerPoint.
  • If you have extra time after completing the two included challenges, for some added speaking practice, students are then tasked to make their own maps and dialogue. Then, they will challenge a partner to figure out how they laid out their map.
  • BONUS! Large images of the place vocabulary have also been included in the worksheet file. You can use these images to review place names or even as a physical version of the game. For example, you can give an image to 8 students, you say the dialogue, and they have to move according to your dialogue (i.e. If you say the library is front of the school, the student holding the library image moves in front of the student holding the school image).
