Listening Online-Friendly Single-Student Friendly 20+ Minute Runtime

Game Features

  • For an added challenge, includes 3 levels of difficulty
  • Teacher's script included as slide 1 in the PowerPoint (hidden)
  • Exciting animations and sound effects
  • Play as a listening or a listening/reading game - templates for both versions included in the PowerPoint

How to Play

  • A bomb has been activated and it’s up to the students to save the city!
  • During the game, the teacher will say a set of words or sentences.
  • Students listen carefully and match the words or sentences they hear to pictures on the screen.
  • The goal is for students to remember the colors under the pictures they match as those are the wires they must cut on the next slide to deactivate the bomb.
  • If they cut the wrong wire, the bomb will explode!
  • You can find additional comments in the notes sections of the PowerPoint that further explain how to play and edit the game.

Variations

  • The instructions above are for the listening version of this game. If you want to add a reading component, use words instead of pictures in the boxes. A template for this version is also included as hidden slides at the end of the PowerPoint.
  • For the online/Zoom version of this game, play as you would the normal game. However on the bomb slide, one by one choose random students to pick a wire to cut. Since you will call on students randomly, all students will have to pay attention when you read your words or sentences as they won't know who you will call on to pick a wire.

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • Students: 27 | Time: 20min | Skill Focus: Listening | Finished Game? 🔴

So all my classes got to level 2, but unfortunately none of them finished the game. I have 27 students per class, for middle school. I would say it'll probably take at least 30-35 minutes to complete. I think maybe it took so long because it took a while to go over my instructions for the point system.

I played as a listening game, and I gave them whiteboards to write down the colors that matched with pictures of the words/sentences I was saying. Then each team would rock paper scissor to find which team got to pick the colors, if that team answered right then they got +2, if wrong -2. All the other teams would get +1 or -1, depending on correctness. (cont. on next slide)

The students also had me repeat the sentences 2-3 times, so take that into account for time as well. Basically, I would say sentence (usually dialogue from the textbook) and they had to listen for the specific words that matched the pictures on the screen. So if you play that way, definitely note that you will probably have to repeat the sentences.

Overall, there was a clear cut winner, after only just making it to level 2, so my students really enjoyed it! - Mikayla

I let students take turns choosing the colors, and we didn't have any points system. Actually, I used the offline version of this game to play it online and asked students to hide each time the bomb exploded. They loved it! - Anon

  • This game is full of potential! I am thinking maybe we play this game in pairs where they would actually play on their own. In our class culture, honesty is a common value that students share. So I think each pair could run the 3 rounds on their own trying over and over again. All teams do this simultaneously and hopefully everyone gets to defuse the bomb in the given time frame. - Perry

  • Love this game. - Kate
