Game Features

  • Game concept based off of Fortnite - incorporates visuals, wording, and sound effects from the actual game
  • If playing the game more than once with the same students, merely reorder the game slides to make it feel like a fresh game

How to Play

  • All students stand up.
  • One by one they choose a box and read the word/sentence in the box.
  • The teacher clicks the box to reveal behind it if they stay standing, sit down, can "heal" a friend, or "take out" a foe.
  • Usually if there's one box left on a slide, I let the student choose whether they want to read that remaining box or test their luck on the next slide with 8 new boxes to choose from.
  • The last student standing is the winner.

Variations

  • I have no variations for this game at this time. If you played it a different way in your class and would like to share, I would be happy to hear from you in the comments below! :)

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • I used the PPT as intended, but grouped students up to allow them to help each other answer. However, I had each team pick 3 sentences to read. This way, they all read more. I had the following conditions:

    1) If you get one or more "stay alive" and one "eliminated", they cancel out.

    2) If you get more than two "eliminated" and one "stay alive", then one team member sits.

    3) If you get three "stay alive" you get one extra life.

The kids enjoyed this variation, and it allowed my below grade-level students to participate actively without the pressure of having to demonstrate their learning in front of everyone. It also serves as a strong re-teaching opportunity for ELL students (which mine are). - Teacher Siseko
