Game Features

  • Clear, visual instructions for students
  • Includes two kinds of card templates for the game
  • Play as a listening or a listening/reading game - card templates for both versions included in the PowerPoint

How to Play

  • Students play in pairs.
  • Each pair gets a set of cards with pictures on them relating to the vocabulary or target language of the lesson.
  • They spread the cards out face up between them.
  • The teacher will say a word or sentence.
  • Students listen carefully and try to grab the card the teacher says before their partner.
  • The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins!

Variations

  • You can play this game in groups as well.
  • The instructions above are for the listening version of this game. To add a reading component, use cards with text instead of pictures on them. The PowerPoint template also includes slides for this version.

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • Students: 25 | Time: 10min | Skill Focus: Listening | Finished Game? 🟢

I usually do this with 5th and 6th grade. We get through two rounds. I will say the key sentence slower to take up a bit more time/ add suspense. I also have students ask a question and I respond with the answer to make it a bit more interactive. - Anon

  • Students: 26 | Time: ~5-10min | Skill Focus: Listening | Finished Game? 🟢

I was able to play 2 rounds. - Anon

  • I love this game! I made it a little more interactive, I put the students in groups of 4 with 3 vocabulary cards in the middle (for the 4th grade lesson, target vocabulary was prepositions, in/on/under). Each round I would say one of the sentences and the students would grab a card. If they grabbed a card they would just listen next. At the end of the round, the students who didn't have a card would ask, "Where is it?" and the other students would answer with their cards and return their cards to the middle to start again. Adds a little dialogue practice to the same game. - KM

  • Karuta! Okay...great game. Always a hit with students. - Bonolo

  • I incorporate speaking for this game by putting them in groups of 4-5. I do the first round saying the vocabulary and all the students listen. Then, I let one person in each group be the "teacher" and lead the game for the table. Then they take turns being teacher and the game runs smoothly with the kids practicing speaking and listening together. - Trin
