What is this?

Odd One Out is a game where students use their knowledge to choose which picture in the group is not the same.

Game details:

Level: Beginner Elementary / Video duration: 3:14 / # of questions: 10

Teaching points:

Teach or review with students the concept of ‘not the same.’

The video begins with an example question you can use to aid discussion and gauge whether or not the students understand how to play the game.

It is recommended to watch through the video first to decide on sentence modelling (how you wish for students to answer the questions as well as how you will ask the question).

To extend the activity time, include additional level appropriate questions such as, “How does it taste? What color is it? Which season is it? How do you spell this word? Where does this animal live?” and so on. Also consider incorporating any teaching points from prior lessons for additional review.

Active Answering:

Team / Individual / Group (auditorium)

There are three pictures, have students make different poses/actions for whichever picture they choose. For example:

  • T: Okay everyone! If ‘Monkey’ is your answer, make a pose like a monkey! Like this (posing yourself as an example).
  • T: Okay everyone! If ‘Flower’ is your answer, pose like a flower! Like this (posing yourself as an example).

If additional time is necessary, have them decide on the poses.

Static Answering:

Hand each student or team a white board, board marker, and an eraser.

Have students write their answers on the boards and turn the boards face down when they are done. Right as the timer is about to end, pause the video and have students lift their boards up before pressing play on the video again to reveal the answer.

Point System:

Award points to correct answers, additional points for correct spelling, and bonus points for student explanations for why the answer is correct. Feel free to set points based on difficulty level. For additional bonus points, have students find the same object in the room.

  • T: Find something red! The first person to touch something red gets 3 bonus points!

Answer Key:

carrot, chair, bike, spaceship, giraffe, elephant, cloud, flower, apple tree, football

You will get a PDF (123KB) file
