Review 40+ Minute Runtime

Game Features

  • Features 85 different animated Pokemon and 32 unique attack animations
  • Pokemon use attacks they actually use in the video game (I tried to make their animations as close as possible with what I could achieve with PowerPoint)
  • XP/Point system is based on Pokemon type strengths and weaknesses from the actual Pokemon video games
  • Tried to use accurate size comparison of Pokemon
  • Depending on the map location, teams will find certain types of Pokemon. For example: water-type Pokemon will be in water or beach locations, fire-type will be near the volcano, bug-type will be in forest areas, etc. Backgrounds of these wild Pokemon match these locations as well (as best they can)

How to Play

  • A student/team chooses a location on the map by picking a number.
  • After answering a question right, they will encounter a wild Pokémon.
  • They will have a choice of 1 of 3 PokéBalls, each containing a different Pokémon.
  • Once they choose a PokéBall, a Pokémon will come out and attack the wild Pokémon for XP (experience points).
  • How many XP they get depends on how effective the attack is. They also have the ability to change points with another team if they are lucky enough to send out a shiny Magikarp.
  • The student/team with the most XP at the end of the game is the winner!
  • Further instructions on how to play/how to use the PowerPoint can be found in the notes section of each slide.

Variations

  • I have no variations for this game at this time. If you played it a different way in your class and would like to share, I would be happy to hear from you in the comments below! :)

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • This game was super successful in all my senior highschool 1st year classes. The kids absolutely loved it and the teachers enjoyed it so much that some have asked me to do it with their 2nd year classes, which I don't usually teach! My classes have 40 students each so I split them up into teams and I give each team a whiteboard and let them race to be the first to show the correct answer. A countdown before each question makes them focus and then I make students change the writer for each question so everyone gets a turn. (continues on next slide)

  • I added a fun rule for the Shiny Magikarp, if the winning team draws him in battle, I let them switch two other teams points. The doors of our classrooms had to be closed because the students start yelling so loud in debate, lol. Also, to make the questions non-repetitive I added in audio and other various media like pictures, video etc. to make the questions more exciting. Ex: Which anime is this song from? and give them 5 seconds of audio. Finding your website has been such a blessing after struggling to make unique games, your PowerPoint skills are awesome! Thank you so much! - Hayes

  • I've been looking through your ppts and these are so amazing and detailed, i'm SHOOK. did you create these all on your own? I will definitely be "buying a coffee" to support. Thanks for the content and for making it free for those on a budget. - Jordyn

  • This game is so beautiful and must have taken a ton of time to create. I'm bringing this to my class and certainly not because I'm a pokegeek lol. Thank you so much. - Bao

  • I like for my younger elementary students to enjoy these more exciting games also so I put phonics audio sounds as the questions! I give them choice options so that it's easier for them to identify which sound they're hearing. - Trinity

  • Hi there, just want to let you know that the kids absolutely love this game to bits and always wanting to play more! It's crazy! - Edwin

  • I just want to say, my students are OBSESSED with this game. I played it with my students once, and now every day they are hoping (practically demanding) we play it again, haha. Thank you for sharing this game and for your amazing website! - Emma

  • I left a message nearly a year ago and today I finally got to use this game! Yay! I just wanted to say thank you for one of the best PPT games I’ve ever seen. My students went crazy over it and I had to tell them to lower their voices multiple times lol - Letty

  • I absolutely love this game. I've seen it made for a couple lessons on Korshare and finally got around to looking at it and WOAH! The animations are amazing. It's like the real game. My kids are going to love this. - Beth

  • My Grade 3 middle school boys LOVED THIS GAME!! This was the first time I saw my whole class really engaging with the materials and getting involved! The animations are SOOO COOL!! I really thank you for taking your time making this one because I am going to use this with all of my grade levels when it comes time for their review! - Mackenzie

  • This game and Exploding Kittens are VERY popular in the various Japanese elementary schools where I teach. - Russell

  • THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE!!! I left a comment months ago with the original version which was great on its own but this has made it even more competitive. So many games have finished with the final team getting the change points and causing pure chaos in the class and I have loved every minute of it!! You are amazing at what you do!!! - Mackenzie

  • This game... I played this game ONCE with my 3rd graders and now it's the only game they ever want to play! My kids are legit addicted to this game! It's honestly a bit scary how much they love this game- please take this as high praise. They are the biggest fans of this game. And fair warning to other teachers: you play this game once and you'll have to play it a million times LOL - Dani

  • This was a hit! I played this with my Japanese 6th graders and when they saw the title page, they went wild! They thought it was just gonna be another powerpoint game but the high quality of it made it more interesting for them (aside from the questions, of course LOL). Seeing their reactions when Charizard came out was priceless.  Thank you so much for making this game and sharing it with the world. I'm so glad I found your website. Looking forward to more! - A

  • I played this with my high school students (both in teams and individually for smaller classes), and they quickly became competitive. For the high school level, I followed an easy eiken format: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I awarded points to all teams who wrote correct responses for the writing questions. Even the students who don't usually participate were trying to get points. Thanks for an amazing game that I will frequently use. - Niki

  • Just wanted to give some massive thanks for this game, it's always a huge hit with my kindergarten and elementary classes here in Japan. - Jack

  • Thank you so much for this PowerPoint game. I played it with my students a while ago and they loved it so much! - C

  • This is by far the best game, high school students love it. we play with 5 teams and practice the phrases we learn with the textbook. - Anon

  • I would like to say my sincerest thanks for this very creative and interactive PowerPoint Game. I really love this and appreciate the effort you put in this PPT. I guess it really took you days to finish this one. I am really grateful for this. I am a student teaching intern and I want an engaging activities that integrates technology, with your help, I can make my class an enjoyable one. I am planning to use this in our action research to enhance the engagement of our students and assess if this strategy is effective. - Felix

I had students in teams and they had to each answer the question by writing the answer on whiteboards (I had students rotate in their teams and students could help each other and use their books). I also rotated in terms of who got the bonus points. e.g. Team 1 picks the question, everyone writes the answers and gets 1 point, Team 1 proceeds to extra point round. - Anon

This game was 100% the most popular game I played all year, especially with 3rd grade. If I played it as a review lesson I could never stretch it to cover the whole 40 mins of class, so you'll need something planned to fill maybe 5 mins before and 5 mins after (e.g. introducing the game for 5 mins before, and reviewing vocab or listening to a song for 5 mins after). - Anon

Middle school kids loved this, took most of class as they would lose their minds over the battle animations. Occasionally would end the game early due to uneven number of teams but overall classes that listened well would finish the whole game with a few minutes left over. - Anon

My kids loved this! I teach in Japan and obviously pokemon is huge here so my Year 9's were obsessed with it. I broke them off into groups to work together on the questions and the first to answer were the ones who got to battle with their pokemon. I found my students were getting sad when Magikarp had 0 xp so I changed it to 1 xp to make them happy. Such a great game!!! - Anon

I gave students a 1 minute timer to answer and had 4 questions left over. In one of my classes kids kept pulling Magikarp and it was killing morale. I started to check which number would pull Magikarp and if they picked it, I'd say "are you SURE you want number 3?" and they'd switch their choice. In another class, however, a team really wanted Magikarp so they doubled down when I pressed them, LMAO. Ty for your hard work, my students think I'm the coolest now <3 - Anon
