Speaking Writing Online-Friendly Single-Student Friendly 20+ Minute Runtime

Game Features

  • Fun imagery, sounds, and animations as well as graphics similar to the actual Pokémon games
  • Scenes for each of the 18 types of Pokémon
  • Play as a reading/writing or a speaking game

How to Play

  • Students play this game individually.
  • In each round, a Pokémon goes in a Poké Ball.
  • The students watch that Poké Ball carefully as the Poké Balls will then shuffle.
  • Once the Poké Balls have stopped shuffling, students guess where the Pokémon now is by a writing the word or sentence under the Poké Ball of their choosing.
  • When all students have finished writing or the music has stopped, the teacher reveals where the Pokémon is.
  • If a student was correct, they get a point.
  • The student with the most points at the end of the game wins!
  • Additional notes of how to play and edit the game can be found in the "notes" sections of the PowerPoint.

Variations

  • The instructions above are for the reading and writing version of this game. I have also played this game to practice speaking. First, I deleted the music on each slide that I used as a writing timer. Then, instead of text in the three boxes under the Poké Balls, I used images. During the game after the Poké Balls shuffled, I had students stand up and say the word/sentence (using the picture) under the Poké Ball they thought the Pokémon was in. For example, I had all students who thought the Pokémon was in the first Poké Ball stand up and say the word/sentence together. Then, I did the same for the second and third Poké Balls. This allows all students a chance to stand up and speak.
  • This game can be played in pairs or groups as well. I usually give each pair/group a mini whiteboard to write their answers on. They can keep track of their own points on their whiteboard too.

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • My students loved this game! I made them choose where to stand in my classroom so it matched with the pokeball and I turned it into a knock-out-game. The last one standing wins and then we repeat. (If the students that are still playing don't choose one of the words then the students who are out can be that word and go back in if the pokemon is there) :] - Anon

  • Love this game! I was a little intimidated at first, but after playing around with it, it was so easy to use! I use this to ask questions in the sentence portion on top and the right answer will have the Pokemon appear. My students really enjoyed it as well and I used it with middle schoolers. Thank you! - Grace
