Category

Speaking Reading Writing Online-Friendly 20+ Minute Runtime

Game Features

  • 80's video game look and feel
  • Sound effects and animated icons
  • Play as a reading or a speaking game - templates for both versions included in the PowerPoint

How to Play

  • Split students up into teams.
  • Each team starts with 4 lives.
  • When the game starts, a team will read a box.
  • The teacher clicks on the box they read and behind it will be either a red heart (stay alive/lose no lives), a white heart (-1 life), a potion (+1 life), or swords (steal a life from another team).
  • The teacher will remove/add lives from the teams accordingly (or teams keep track of their own lives).
  • If a team loses all their lives, they are out of the game.
  • The team with most lives at the end of the game or the last time remaining wins!

Variations

  • You can also play this game in pairs or individually if there aren’t too many students.
  • The instructions above are for the reading version of this game. To play as a speaking game, use images instead of words in the boxes. A template for this version is also included as hidden slides at the end of the PowerPoint. Further in instructions on how to play and edit this version are found in the "notes" section of the PowerPoint.
  • If you want to use it as a writing activity, have teams choose a box by writing the word/sentence in the box. Then, reveal what's behind each box after teams are finished writing.
  • The online/Zoom version of this game is also a writing variation. Similar to the writing variation above, students choose a box by writing the word/sentence in the box. However, this version is done individually and students keep track of their own lives on their paper. Some other minor changes include students starting with 5 lives instead of 4 and the "steal a life" reward being removed. I have also added a new rule: Instead of a student being out if they lose all their lives, they can have negative lives. Furthermore, if at any point a student has negative lives, they have write the word or sentence they choose twice instead of just once. Though, feel free to delete or adjust this rule if you don't want to play with it.

Teacher Feedback

(comments and runtimes from the previous version of my site)

  • Students: 35 | Time: 35-40min | Skill Focus: Speaking | Finished Game? 🟢

I wanted the students to play individually so they would get to speak a lot. I printed out 5 different itineraries (with empty hearts at the top to fill in and erase with a pencil) and then on the powerpoint I had question words (Who, when, when, what, how etc). I put the students into groups of 5 and then the students had to compete for hearts within their groups by choosing a question word and asking and answering questions based on their itinerary. I had about 3-4 minutes per slide to allow students to choose a question word and then ask each other questions. This also gave me the opportunity to roam around the classroom and listen to their sentences. Changes I made to the powerpoint: Shortened it to 8 questions and I made the red heart worth 1 heart and the potion worth 2 as the idea of the red heart doing nothing confused the students. I reduced the number of potions and added more swords as the students really enjoyed stealing hearts from each other. I also changed the sword sound to a bigger and more intimidating sound (explosion) to capture their attention when it occurred as it and the potion were their favourite ones to obtain. - Anon

Did this as an alphabet reading game for 3rd grade elementary students. I modified it to where each box was a letter, clicking on the letter revealed a word starting with that letter, and then clicking again revealed the heart underneath. I had them in 4 teams of 5 student's each, with one student from a team picking a letter, and then the whole team reading/spelling the word. They all seemed to have a lot of fun. - Anon

  • Children loved it - I made and laminated magnetic team names using the same font as the game and 'life' hearts to stick on the board to visualise the scoring system, which was more exciting and made explaining it easier (physically taking away/replacing hearts, and removing the team name from the board when they were out). Great fun - as always thankful for your skills in making these games!! - Hannah

  • I teach middle school and my 1st graders went wild for this last year. I'm going to try this out with my 3rd graders who usually don't want to do anything but sleep, so we'll see how it goes with the older crowd. - Regina

  • My 5th graders loved this game! Very engaging and the students were really receptive, I also printed hearts to stick on the board beside the team names and it was a big hit, thanks for making this game! - Muireann

  • This is AMAZING!!!! I am always in awe of your templates. Thank you!!! - Anon
