End of School Year MASH Game & Writing Activity
Students predict what their next school year will be like with this fun, 2-part MASH game and writing activity! It's also a great way to practice writing, reading, and speaking using the future tense.
Part 1:
Students fill out the worksheet and play MASH! (NOTE: I changed MASH to stand for motorcycle, automobile, school bus, and helicopter to signify how students will "get to school" next year to go along with the concept of this version of the game.)
- First, students fill in the four blanks under each category with their own answers. To make it more fun, I encourage my students to use both real and funny answers. For example, under the "Teacher" category, a student could write, "Mrs. Smith, Mr. Johnson, an alien, and my dog."
- Once all categories are filled in, they close their eyes and draw a spiral in the magic ball until you or one of their friends say stop.
- They then count how many rings they have on their spiral. That is their magic number.
- Using their magic number, starting with the "M" in MASH, they count off each option until they reach their number. They then cross off the option they land on. They continue this process until one option is left in each category (which they circle), skipping already crossed-off options as they count.
- Once one option in each category is circled, they have their fortune and can move on to part 2!
- Here's a helpful YouTube video if you want a visual explanation of the game.
If your students have never played MASH before, it helped me to do one example together as a whole class on the board.
Part 2:
Using their circled answers in part one, students now write a story about their prediction for next school year. A blank paragraph is provided for them on the other side of the worksheet to do this. Once finished, they then can draw and color a picture to go with their story in the provided box.
Extra time:
If you have time left over, have each of your students present their stories to the rest of the class! My students had so much fun sharing their crazy predictions for the next school year. Lots of laughs were definitely had.
